Cameron Diaz ends her retirement with her first role in 8 years

Cameron Diaz is officially ending her retirement with plans to return to her chosen career.

The “Charlie’s Angels” and “My Best Friend’s Wedding” star will appear opposite Jamie Foxx in Netflix’s comedy “Rebirth.” The two actors have worked together twice before, on “Any Sunday” in 1999 and “Annie” in 2014.

Variety reports that Seth Gordon, whose Hollywood resume includes “The Scary Boss” and “Four Christmases,” will direct the film.

While details on the project are scarce, Fox confirmed Diaz’s casting on Twitter Wednesday afternoon and posted a clip of a phone conversation between the two actors.

“I’m in a rush right now. I’m like pacing the room,” Diaz said, before adding. “I’m excited, but I don’t know what to do.”

Minutes later, Fox linked Diaz with NFL superstar Tom Brady, who announced his retirement from professional football earlier this year and rejoined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 40 days later.

“I was talking to Jamie and he said you need some tips on how to retire,” Brady praised Diaz. “I’ve been relatively successful in not retiring.”

It’s unclear if Brady will be further involved in “return to action.” The film’s release date has not been confirmed.

Diaz announced her retirement from show business in 2018, four years after her last on-screen appearance in “Annie,” which received mixed reviews.

“I’m also semi-retired, I’m actually retired, so I’d love to meet you ladies,” she told “The Sweetest Thing” co-star Christina Appleey in an interview with Entertainment Weekly Gate and Selma Blair.

Diaz and husband Benji Madden welcomed a daughter, Radix, in 2020. Last year, she admitted she still loves acting, but said her decision to stay away from Hollywood allowed her to better manage her schedule as a new mom.

“I just look around and there are so many parts of my life that I don’t touch, that I don’t manage, that I can’t really manage because everything is so huge,” she said on Kevin Hart’s “Heart of Hart” podcast in 2021 told him on the show. “For me, I just really want my life to be manageable by me. My day-to-day routine is literally what I can do on my own. It’s the best feeling.”
